As well as being the commissioning editor of English-language programme notes for the Salzburg Festival, Gavin has written for The Guardian, The Times, The Independent on Sunday, British Airways High LifeThe Hudson Review, BBC Music Magazine, BMI Voyager, GQ.com, Opera Now, OperaClassical Music and Sinfini Music. Gavin also edits programmes for the Salzburg Easter Festival and the Oxford Lieder Festival.

Gavin writes regularly for Wigmore Hall and the Royal Opera House and this season he is also writing programme notes for the Wiener Staatsoper, Metropolitan Opera, New York, Carnegie Hall, The Juilliard School, BBC Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, La Monnaie, Dutch National Opera, Opera North, Oxford Lieder Festival, CBSO, LPO, LSO, Scottish Opera and the Salzburg Festival.

He has contributed liner notes to recordings by Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Hyperion Records, col legno, Tudor Classics, Stone Records, Challenge Classics, LSO Live, LPO Live, Newton Classics, Opus Arte and EMI.
